Screening Monday Evening of PBS Series, Art21

On Monday evening, April 16 in the new Visual Arts Auditorium, the Art Museum and Art Department will host a screening of the second half of the PBS series, Art21. Two episodes from the series will be shown: "History" and "Boundaries," and will begin at 6 pm.

Art21 is a series organized every three years by PBS that focuses on contemporary artists from around the world. Through in-depth profiles and interviews, the series focuses on the creative methods and inspiration in today's art world.

Film Screening on Edward Burtynsky Tonight

Join us tonight for a film screening, Manufactured Landscapes, being held in conjunction with the exhibition, Edward Burtynsky: The Industrial Sublime, which is currently on view at the Art Museum. Here is what Zeitgeist Films has to say about this 2006 film by Jennifer Baichwal:

The film follows him through China, as he shoots the evidence and effects of that country’s massive industrial revolution. With breathtaking sequences, such as the opening tracking shot through an almost endless factory, the filmmakers also extend the narratives of Burtynsky’s photographs, allowing us to meditate on our impact on the planet.

The screening will be at 7 pm and will be held next door to the Art Museum in the new Visual Arts Building Auditorium. The event if free and open to the public. The Art Museum will be open tonight until 9 pm, so you can go look at Burtynsky's work either before or after the film screening!

20:20 for Statewide Artists in Pinedale

20:20 for statewide artists will be held on Friday, March 30 at the Sublette County Public Library at 7:30 pm. This event is being held in conjunction with the CLICK! Symposium. For those wishing to participate in 20:20 you must be signed up for CLICK!

20:20 is a fast-paced presentation format whereby presenters are allotted 20 images, which are shown for 20 seconds each. The total presentation time is therefore only 6 minutes and 40 seconds. Presentations by individual visual artists, art groups and educators from across the state are welcome. 20:20 is an opportunity to share accomplishments, new work and new ideas from across the region.

Advance sign-up is required and offered on a first come, first served basis. 20 images must be in a PowerPoint format and sent to UW Art Museum Assistant Curator Rachel Miller by Wednesday, March 21. Gallery Walk Through: Award Winning Students

Join us tonight at the Art Museum for a Gallery Walk Through with students who have won awards for their work in the 37th Annual Juried University of Wyoming Student Exhibition. This public program begins at 7 pm and is free and open to the public. Each award winning student will be given a few minutes to talk about their work on view, as well as what they're currently working on in the studio. This is a great professional opportunity for students to practice speaking in public about their artwork, and for the public to learn more about the creativity of students from around campus!

Tonight is also the first night of our extended Monday night hours. Beginning tonight through the end of April, the Art Museum will be open until 9 pm on Monday evenings, providing more opportunities to visit.

Lighting of the Trees Ceremony Thursday Evening

Please join the UW Art Museum for the Lighting of the Trees Ceremony on Thursday evening from 6-8 pm. This is the kick-off event for the Festival of the Trees - an annual event that includes more than 30 holiday trees decorated by members of the community. The Lighting of the Trees Ceremony opens the silent auction bidding on the decorated trees and other holiday decor, including flower arrangements, wreaths, and decorations. Cider, brownies, and lemon bars will be served, and it's also when the public gets to place their vote for the "People's Choice Award" tree. The schedule below outlines the groups and individuals who will be playing live holiday music.

Festival of Trees Decorating Begins Today

The Art Museum is busy already as community groups and organizations begin decorating their trees for the annual Festival of Trees. Every year, volunteers decorate holiday trees that are auctioned off in support of Art Museum programs and education classes. The silent auction of the trees continues until 2 pm on Saturday during the community celebration, Happy Holidays, Laramie!

Decorating will continue until 5 pm today and extended hours will be available tomorrow, 10 am - 8 pm, for decorating. The completed trees will be on view Thursday evening at the Lighting of the Trees Ceremony from 6-8 pm and will include live music, refreshments, and voting for the popular "People's Choice" tree.

Art Talk and Gallery Walk Through

North Dakota small metals artist Donovan Widmer is in town and will present two public programs at the Art Museum today and tomorrow. When he isn't here at the museum, he will be giving a mini-workshop and student critiques in the art department. See below for more information or call us at 307.766.6622. Art Talk: This public lecture will be tonight at 7 pm at the Art Museum. Widmer will present a PowerPoint with images of previous and new work, and he will talk about the works on view in his solo exhibition at the Art Museum.

Gallery Walk Through: This will be a more informal walk through Widmer's exhibition, and will be tomorrow, Tuesday, at 10:30 am. Widmer will answer questions and provide insight specifically about the works on view.

Art Talk on Monday Night

UW Department of History Chair and Associate Professor Michael Brose will present an Art Talk on Monday night, October 10 at 7 pm in conjunction with the exhibition, Talismans of Protection from Choson Korea: Antique Locks, Latches, and Key Charms.

The exhibition is on loan from the Lock Museum in Seoul, Korea and was organized for travel by the Korea Society, New York. It features antique metalwork from the Choson Dynasty, the last and longest reigning dynasty of Korea. Brose will be presenting historical and cultural background information on the Choson time period.

Art Talk: Margo Grant Walsh, tonight at the Art Museum

Collector Margo Grant Walsh will present a public Art Talk tonight at 7 pm at the Art Museum. A selection from Grant Walsh's collection of silver is currently on view in the exhibition, Silver & Metalwork of the 20th Century. The exhibition presents over 200 items from her unique collection that emphasizes design and functionality.

The Art Talk tonight will give an overview of silver and Grant Walsh will also discuss how and why she collects. Tomorrow, she will give a more informal Gallery Walk Through at 4:30 pm and discuss the specific work on view.

"Art Imidates Dance" online exhibition on Facebook

A new online exhibition titled, Art Imitates Dance, is now available to view on the Art Museum's Facebook page. Simply log in to your account and search for "University of Wyoming Art Museum." A photo album featuring 10 works from the permanent collection is on view.

This online exhibition is part of a collaboration with the Laramie Dance Center. Every year, the Dance Center holds a spring performance that is the culmination of a year's worth of hard work in each class - from tap to ballet to belly dancing. The theme of this year's performance is Art Imitates Dance, and each instructor selected a piece of artwork as the basis for the choreography, music, and costumes.

While the Art Museum doesn't have the specific artworks in the permanent collection, we do have similar works by some of the same artists and their contemporaries. This online exhibition features five works by some of the same artists who were selected by Laramie Dance Center instructors, and five works by contemporaries of other artists who work in either the same style, or have the same themes in their work.

Information about each piece is listed under the image, along with the title and artist of the similar work selected by the Laramie Dance Center. The goal of this online exhibition is to continue making connections between dance, gesture, movement and art. Each image in the online exhibition also features questions that encourage viewers to look closely and explore ideas about dance and art.

The Laramie Dance Center spring performance is this Saturday, May 21 at 1pm in the A&S Auditorium. It is free and open to the public. TONIGHT - Herb & Dorothy film screening

Join us tonight at the Art Museum for a screening of the film, Herb & Dorothy at 7 pm. We will be showing the film downstairs in the Centennial Complex Restaurant, which can be accessed from the lower front entrance or from the stairs off the lobby. This public program is free, and we'll be serving popcorn and soda to make it a true movie night!

Herb & Dorothy tells the story of the Vogels, a librarian and a postal clerk, who amassed an impressive collection of modern American art. The UW Art Museum received 50 pieces through their program with the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Fifty States. A selection of those works is on view at the Art Museum through August 27.

The Art Museum is hosting a film screening of the documentary, Herb & Dorothy (Arthouse Films, Maguna Susaki, director), on Monday evening, April 4 at 7 pm. The film will be shown in the Centennial Complex Restaurant, which is accessible through the lower level front entrance. Refreshments will be served and the screening is free and open to the public.

The film tells the story of Herbert Vogel, a postal clerk, and Dorothy Vogel, a librarian, who spent 45 years collecting contemporary American art and amassed a collection of over 2,000 pieces. Recognizing their collection would be too unwieldy for one institution, they developed a program through the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. that distributed 50 works of art to public collections in each of the 50 states. The UW Art Museum was chosen as the Wyoming participant in the program. A selection of the works gifted to the UW Art Museum are on view until Aug. 27.

Tonight at the Art Museum - a Focus on Faculty

Two public programs tonight at the Art Museum highlight some of the work that's happening on campus by various faculty members. First, at 6 pm, is a Gallery Walk Through with UW Art Department faculty, whose work is currently on exhibition in the museum. Those faculty members who teach drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, graphic design, or foundations classes, will have the opportunity to talk about their own work and what inspires them. This informal gathering is a great time to hear directly from the artists and ask questions!

Following the Gallery Walk Through is a second public program that begins at 7 pm, called 20:20. With a broader focus, this program is a chance for both UW and LCCC faculty to showcase their work - whether it's art, research, writing, music, or dance - in a brief presentation. Presenters are given 20 slides, each of which is only shown for 20 seconds. This fast-paced format keeps the evening lively and informative. Please join us for 20:20, which will feature presentations by faculty members from the art department, civil and architectural engineering, photography, geology, and a range of other interesting topics.

There's Still Time to Sign Up for 20:20 Faculty

There is still time for LCCC and UW faculty members to sign up for 20:20, a public program hosted by the UW Art Museum that will be on Monday evening, March 7 at 7 pm. If you've ever wondered what other faculty members or departments are working on across campus, this is your chance!

This is an opportunity for faculty members to share with their colleagues and the community what is happening both on campus and off. We would like to hear about a range of topics – what is the art faculty creating in their studios? What kinds of collaborative projects is the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources working on? How does entomology combine with creative writing? What kinds of building designs are civil engineering students creating?

Two years ago, the UW Art Museum began a new program called 20:20, with the intention of providing a forum for sharing new ideas, projects, and work. What began as a program for visual artists has now expanded, and we’d like to extend an invitation to all LCCC and UW faculty and staff to participate in our next 20:20 event.

The goal of 20:20 is to provide people an opportunity to share their work in a fast-paced format that is engaging for the audience. For those who have images, a PowerPoint presentation is shown, consisting of 20 slides, each one shown for 20 seconds. The result is a 6 minute and 40 second presentation. It is not only a chance to show images, but we invite musicians, dancers, writers, or other performance based work to be presented in the same 6 minute and 40 second time frame.

Advance sign up is required by Friday, March 4^th. A minimum of 8 presenters is needed.

This is an opportunity for students to practice talking about the concepts and ideas behind their work, and is a chance for the community to hear directly from the artists about the work that is on view. 20:20 Students is scheduled for Monday evening, February 7th at 7 pm. All UW students from any discipline are invited to sign up. This is an opportunity for any student who creates art to share images of their work and talk about what they do.

Each presenter is allowed 20 images in a PowerPoint format, and each image is shown for 20 seconds. The result is a 6 minute and 40 second presentation. This allows for many presentations, and eliminates stage fright!

If you are a student who is considering entering the art world professionally, or applying to graduate school, this is a great time to share your portfolio and add a professional development opportunity to your resume!

Art Talk: Rebecca Solnit

An Art Talk by author, cultural historian, and activist Rebecca Solnit will be tonight at the Art Museum beginning at 7 pm. A book signing and reception will follow.

UW Eminent Writer in Residence through the MFA Creative Writing Program, Solnit will discuss her month-long efforts with university students and members of the Laramie community to “remap” the community and its resources. An echo of Solnit’s work on the “Infinite City” project in San Francisco in 2010, the Laramie Atlas Project is a unique opportunity for artist, writers, citizens, and students to rethink—and reimagine—their neighborhoods. Please join Solnit, one of the most original scholars of America and its arts, in this presentation of the Laramie she and her collaborators have mapped so far.

Welcome Back Students!

Now that UW is back in session for the spring semester, the Art Museum would like to remind students of the many upcoming opportunities specifically for students. Those who are interested in submitting artwork for consideration in the 36th Annual Juried University of Wyoming Student Exhibition must drop artwork off at the Art Museum this week, Thursday and Friday, January 13 and 14 between 9 am and 4 pm. The exhibition is open to any undergraduate, graduate, and post-baccelaureate students from any disciple who were enrolled in the 2011 academic year. The entry form and all of the details can be found on the Art Museum website.

If your artwork is not accepted into the exhibition, students have the option of showing their work in the Student Art League's 16th annual Salon des Refuses, which will be shown in the UP Gallery in the Fine Arts Building January 25-February 5. Students have the option to sign up or opt out of this exhibition upon dropping off their artwork at the Art Museum.

The opening reception for all of the spring exhibitions, including the Annual Juried UW Student Exhibition will be on Friday, January 28 from 6-8 pm. The Award Ceremony for the student exhibition will begin at 6:30 pm. This year there are over 30 awards to be given out.

Students who do win an award at the Awards Ceremony are then given the chance to talk about their work on Monday, February 7, at 6 pm. This Gallery Walk Through is open to the public, and many of the Art Museum's docents attend to learn about the art on view. This is a chance for students to tell the public about their artwork in their own words.

A second professional development opportunity is also available that evening, Monday, February 7 at 7 pm. 20:20 is a public program where student artists, not just those included in the Annual Juried UW Student Exhibition, are given 20 slides in PowerPoint format, and each one is shown for 20 seconds. This fast-paced presentation is a great way for artists to share their artwork, get feedback, and practice talking about what they do. It's a good opportunity especially for upper level students who have a prepared portfolio and might be thinking about entering the job market or applying for graduate school.

Save the Dates for 20:20: 2/7 and 3/7 @ 7 pm

The first two 20:20 events of 2011 are coming up! The Art Museum has been holding various 20:20 events for the past year and a half. This program is designed for artists to share their work, network with colleagues, and to keep the community informed of the different artists who work in the area. Those who sign up are given 20 images in a PowerPoint format, and each image is shown for only 20 seconds, resulting in a 6 minute and 40 second presentation. This fast-paced format keeps the presentations informal, eliminating stage fright, and keeps the audience engaged.

The first 20:20 of 2011 is on Monday, February 7th at 7 pm and is open to any and all UW students. This includes students from all disciplines, not just art. If you, or another student you know of, are art majors or creates art in his or her spare time and would like to present what they do to peers, faculty members, and the community, please consider signing up.

The second 20:20 is a month later, on Monday, March 7th at 7 pm and is open to LCCC and UW faculty members in the visual and performing arts. This is a chance for professors to share with their students and the community what they create outside of the classroom.

It's a Tie!

This year's People's Choice Award is a tie! The votes were tallied after last night's Tree Lighting Ceremony where people voted on their favorite holiday tree in the Festival of Trees. The tie came down to Governor and Mrs. Dave Freudenthal's tree, "Forever West" and KP Endsley's tree, "William 'Bill' Hysong Memorial Tree 2010 - Tickled Pink." Congratulations to both!

There was a great turnout at last night's event, which included musical performances throughout the evening. The festivities continue tomorrow during Happy Holidays, Laramie! between 10:30 am and 3 pm. This annual community event is free and open to the public. Be sure to stop by for a visit with Santa Claus, holiday musical performances, or to bid on one of the many beautifully decorated holiday trees!
