Final Week to See Two Exhibitions

Saturday, Aug. 27 will be the last day to see the exhibitions, The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Fifty States and, Serena Perrone: A Volcano Pilgrim in Exchange for Fire at the University of Wyoming Art Museum.

The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Fifty States features works collected by a retired postal clerk and his wife, a former librarian, who spent 45 years collecting contemporary American art and amassed a collection of over 2,000 pieces. Recognizing their collection would be too unwieldy for one institution, they developed a program through the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. called “Fifty Works for Fifty States” that distributed 50 works of art to public collections in each of the 50 states. The UW Art Museum was chosen as the Wyoming participant in the program. The works are representative of the Vogels’ interest in Minimalist, Conceptualist and post-1960s art.

Serena Perrone: A Volcano Pilgrim in Exchange for Fire chronicles the tragic loss of UW professor and poet Craig Arnold in April of 2009 through a series of printsthat layer color, line and text. The 20 prints on view represent Arnold’s twenty days of travel in Japan where he was studying volcanoes for a new book. Laid over the images of sky, earth or volcano is text taken from Arnold’s travel blog.

TONIGHT - Herb & Dorothy film screening

Join us tonight at the Art Museum for a screening of the film, Herb & Dorothy at 7 pm. We will be showing the film downstairs in the Centennial Complex Restaurant, which can be accessed from the lower front entrance or from the stairs off the lobby. This public program is free, and we'll be serving popcorn and soda to make it a true movie night!

Herb & Dorothy tells the story of the Vogels, a librarian and a postal clerk, who amassed an impressive collection of modern American art. The UW Art Museum received 50 pieces through their program with the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Fifty States. A selection of those works is on view at the Art Museum through August 27.

The Art Museum is hosting a film screening of the documentary, Herb & Dorothy (Arthouse Films, Maguna Susaki, director), on Monday evening, April 4 at 7 pm. The film will be shown in the Centennial Complex Restaurant, which is accessible through the lower level front entrance. Refreshments will be served and the screening is free and open to the public.

Opening Reception Tomorrow Evening

You're invited to join the UW Art Museum tomorrow evening, Friday, January 28, for the reception celebrating the opening of all new exhibitions. The reception will be from 6 to 8 pm.

Exhibitions that are opening include: The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Fifty States, Richard Barnes: Animal Logic, American Regionalism: Selections from the Art Museum Collection, UW Art Department Faculty Exhibition, and the ever popular Annual Juried UW Student Exhibition.

An award ceremony for the student exhibition will begin at 6:30 pm with 48 awards to be distributed to student artists.

The reception is free and open to the public. Please join us as we celebrate our student artists and an array of exciting new artwork.
