Artist Brian Dickerson was on the radio this morning with KOWB to talk to Laramie Live about his solo exhibition here at the UW Art Museum. Their website has a link to the audio clip from this morning where you can hear what he has to say about his work.

Dickerson will be presenting a Gallery Walk Through this evening at the museum at 4:30 pm. This will be followed by our spring opening reception from 6 to 8 pm. Both events are free and open to the public.

Art Museum Closed Monday for Labor Day

The Art Museum will be closed on Monday, September 5 for Labor Day, but there will be plenty of other activities later in the week! We will be open on Saturday, when a new exhibition, Talismans of Protection from Choson Korea: Antique Locks, Latches, and Key Charms opens.

Next week we will be holding two public programs with silver collector Margo Grant Walsh. On Thursday evening, September 8 at 7 pm she will present an Art Talk. On Friday, September 9 at 4:30 pm she will host a more informal Gallery Walk Through. Both events are free and open to the public.

On Friday, September 9 from 6-8 pm we will celebrate the opening of all of our new fall exhibitions with a free opening reception.

Laramie: A Gem City Atlas Reception on Monday

A reception sponsored by the MFA in Creative Writing Program for the exhibition, Laramie: A Gem City Atlas, will be held on Monday, May 2, from 5-7 pm at the Art Museum. Readings by some of the students who have maps in the exhibition will begin at 5:15. The exhibition features 16 maps and accompanying artwork that examine the various ways in which Laramie and the surrounding area can be envisioned. Maps act as a visual representation of goods, services, people, and other factors that make up the community.

The project originated early in the semester with the UW MFA in Creative Writing Program and Eminent Writer in Residence, Rebecca Solnit. Solnit had completed a similar project in which she re-envisioned and re-mapped San Francisco. For the Laramie project, she worked with students to identify areas of interest that the students could research and map.

This Monday also marks the final Monday night when the Art Museum has extended evening hours until 9 pm. Summer hours will be Monday-Saturday, 10 am - 5 pm. Please join us for the final Monday night at the museum by celebrating Laramie: A Gem City Atlas.

Opening Reception Tomorrow Evening

You're invited to join the UW Art Museum tomorrow evening, Friday, January 28, for the reception celebrating the opening of all new exhibitions. The reception will be from 6 to 8 pm.

Exhibitions that are opening include: The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection: Fifty Works for Fifty States, Richard Barnes: Animal Logic, American Regionalism: Selections from the Art Museum Collection, UW Art Department Faculty Exhibition, and the ever popular Annual Juried UW Student Exhibition.

An award ceremony for the student exhibition will begin at 6:30 pm with 48 awards to be distributed to student artists.

The reception is free and open to the public. Please join us as we celebrate our student artists and an array of exciting new artwork.

Today at the Art Museum

There are several events today at the Art Museum. At 4:30 pm Norwegian artist Anne-Karin Furunes will present a Gallery Walk Through. She will talk about her unique artistic process of perforating canvases, as well as the various series she has created, and her source material.

Following the Gallery Walk Through, beginning at 6 pm, is an opening reception for all of the new fall exhibitions. Six new exhibitions will be celebrated. Refreshments will be served. Both events are free and open to the public.

Neltje - exhibition opens on Saturday

An exhibition featuring eminent Wyoming artist Neltje (American, b. 1934) will open on Saturday, May 22 at the UW Art Museum. Neltje highlights recent paintings, including new works that incorporate paper, text, and found objects.

Neltje’s work is rooted in movement and gesture. Her early works, in the form of sumi-e, a characteristically Asian style of brush painting similar to calligraphy, allowed her the freedom to experiment with line and motion. As her work evolved, she found inspiration in the work of other abstract artists like Jon Schueler and Joan Mitchell. Their bold approach to color and making distinctive marks on the canvas influenced Neltje’s own creative process.

Neltje will be in Laramie June 3-5, and will provide a Gallery Walk Through on Friday, June 4 at 10:30 am. She will give an Art Talk on Saturday, June 5 at 1:30 pm. An opening reception for all summer exhibitions will be held on Friday, June 4 at 6 pm. All events are free and open to the public.
