2013-2014 Membership Campaign

Every April the Art Museum launches a new Membership campaign to raise unrestricted funds for exhibition and education programs.  Different membership levels are available for individuals, students, families, and businesses.  Museum members receive a 10% discount on items in the Museum Store and a 10% discount on Shelton Studio classes.  They are also the first to receive updated museum information like our newsletter, and receive invitations to special events and openings.  If you join at the $1000 level, you also receive a reproduction print of the painting above, which can be seen in the current exhibition of Haitian paintings from the collection.

Membership funds are an essential element of the Art Museum as they provide support for projects such as the Museum as Classroom initiative, as well as special exhibitions.  These funds also help support our Visitor Services, who in turn ensure that our museum visitors have a welcoming, informative, and positive experience at the museum.

Ask Judy Pfaff Your Questions

An Art Talk in the format of a Q&A session with artist Judy Pfaff will be held at the Art Museum on Monday, April 15 at 7 pm.  If you've seen Judy's installation at the Art Museum, or are familiar with her work and have a question you'd like to ask her, now is your chance!

We will be collecting questions through next Wednesday, April 10.  Once we receive all of the questions, we'll sort through them and pick the best ones for her to answer on the 15th.  You can submit questions either in the comments section of this post, or on our Facebook page.  If you don't want your question to be seen publicly, you can also email it to our general email account, uwartmus@uwyo.edu.

The Q&A session is free and open to the public, so we invite you to stop in that evening and hear directly from Judy as she answers what people really want to know about!  Be sure to get your question in today!

Preceding the Q&A session will be an opening reception from 6 - 7 pm, which is also free and open to the public, and the Art Museum will be open that day from 10 am - 9 pm, so there are plenty of opportunities to stop by and see her work before the public programs.

 

New Exhibition of Haitian Art Opens This Saturday

A new exhibition of Haitian paintings will open at the UW Art Museum on Saturday, April 6.  Image and Culture: Haitian Paintings from the Art Museum Collection presents an overview of 20th century Haitian art and explores different styles, techniques, and subject matter.

Haitian art is a reflection of the island nation’s unique history, culture, religion, and people.  With vibrant colors and varied styles and techniques, the paintings included in this exhibition address topics ranging from the military and religious history of the country to more contemporary abstract works.  Haitian art is a celebration of the nation’s culture and identity, despite there being little formalization to the various movements and styles.

The exhibition will be on view through May 11.

Last Chance to See Linda Fleming's Large-Scale Sculptures

Linda Fleming's laser-cut steel sculpture, Refugium, is located to the west of the Classroom Building.  It is scheduled for de-installation next week.

This is the final week to see two large-scale sculptures on the University of Wyoming Campus.  After being on long-term loan to the UW Art Museum, two sculptures by California artist Linda Fleming will be de-installed beginning on April 8.

Refugium was installed on the west side of the classroom building in 2008 for the exhibition, Sculpture: A Wyoming Invitational.  The exhibition brought large-scale works to campus and around the Laramie community.

Fumerole is on view on the sculpture terrace at the UW Art Museum.  It was installed in conjunction with Fleming’s 2012 solo exhibition, Linda Fleming: Modeling the Universe.

Fleming's work explores themes of science, nature, and the human place in the world.  Her large, laser-cut steel works invite the viewer to walk around, and sometimes inside, the sculpture.  Fleming maintains studios in the San Francisco Bay area, Nevada, and Colorado.  She has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and teaches at the California College of the Arts.

This Weekend at the Art Museum

The Art Museum will be open on Saturday, March 30, so be sure to include us in your Easter weekend plans!  Saturday will be the final day to view the exhibition, Beth Van Hoesen: Perfecting Printmaking.  This exhibition features prints that were recently gifted to the Art Museum collection.

Opening on Saturday is the new exhibition, Judy Pfaff: Come What May, which features 2D and 3D mixed media works.  Pfaff is currently the UW Artist in Residence and is on campus this semester teaching in the Visual Arts Department.

This Saturday is also the final day of free classes for March Art Month.  Students ages 4-11 are welcome to attend.  There is no fee to attend and class is 1-3 pm.  Bring your student by if they are interested in learning about art techniques and making their own art project!

Installation is underway for the exhibition, Judy Pfaff: Come What May

Eminent Artist in Residence Judy Pfaff has been busy this week installing work for her upcoming exhibition, Judy Pfaff: Come What May.  The works featured in the exhibition range from 2D mixed media pieces to 3D ceiling and wall mounted works that incorporate light elements. 

Pfaff has been on campus all semester teaching classes in the Art Department.  She will be giving a Gallery Walk Through of her exhibition on Tuesday, April 16 at 10:30 am.  For more information about her work, you can check out her website.

Her exhibition will be on view at the UW Art Museum March 30 - May 4, 2013.

Spring Break Art Camp is This Week

During Spring Break Art Camp, students have the opportunity to work on their own art projects in the Shelton Studio

The UW Art Museum will be hosting its annual Spring Break Art Camp for students age 6-10 this week, March 18-22, from 1 - 4:45 pm each day. 

The theme of this year’s Spring Break Art Camp is “Investigating the Artistic Process.”  Students will explore the artwork exhibited in the Art Museum and then use what they learn to draw inspiration from everyday moments to make extraordinary art!  Students will discover different kinds of materials and ways to make art in the Shelton Studio, including sculpture, painting, collage, and more.  

Students may enroll for the entire week or for just a day.  The cost is $60 for the week or a $15 a day drop-in rate.  Healthy snacks will be provided.  To register, please contact Art Museum Master Teacher Heather Bender at 307-766-3515 or hbender1@uwyo.edu.
