Spring Break at the Art Museum

Are you staying in town for Spring Break? The Art Museum has plenty to see and do next week! The 37th Annual Juried UW Student Exhibition is only on view through next Saturday, March 17, so be sure to stop in next week to see the wide variety of work being created by students across campus. A free cell phone audio tour is also available for select pieces and were recorded by the art students who created the work.

If you have an elementary aged student, Spring Break Art Camp will also be next week at the Art Museum. Students will explore artwork on view in the museum and then using what they learned, make their own art projects in the Shelton Studio. Students will have the opportunity to work with a variety of materials, including painting and sculpture, and even writing! Community Night at McAlister's Deli to Support the Shelton Studio

McAlister's Deli is hosting a Community Night next Wednesday, October 19. Join the Art Museum for dinner between 5 pm and 9 pm and 10% of proceeds will go to support the Shelton Studio scholarship fund.

Afternoon at the Museum is on Monday

Afternoon at the Museum, a UW Art Museum class for students with the afternoon off due to Albany County School District staff development, will be offered on Monday, April 25 from 1 – 5 p.m. Students ages 6 – 10 are invited to attend and spend the afternoon investigating and producing art.

During the afternoon students will look at the theme of place as they tour the exhibitions, From the Scottish Sublime to the American West, Selected Works from the University of Wyoming and Etsuko Ichikawa: NACHI –between the eternal and the ephemeral–. Using these exhibitions as inspiration, students will use a variety of materials to explore their own ideas of place. Healthy snacks are provided.

The class is $20 per student or $15 per student for families signing up 3 or more children. Pre-registration is encouraged, but is not required. Final March Art Month Class This Saturday

The final March Art Month Saturday class will be this Saturday, March 26th, 1 - 3 pm, at the Art Museum. It is open for students age 4-11. Parents of students age 5 and younger are asked to remain with their children.

This class is a great way for students to explore new ideas, concepts and artistic mediums. The class will explore artwork that is on view in the museum, and then using the ideas and materials seen there, create their own work in the Shelton Studio.

Spring Break Art Camp

As college students vacate Laramie next week for spring break, the Art Museum is inviting kids ages 6 to 12 to join our education team for Spring Break Art Camp. The camp will run Monday - Friday, March 14-18 from 1 pm to 4:45 pm each day.

The theme of this year's camp is, "Make the Everyday Extraordinary." If you like to make art and are curious about new forms and materials, this is the class for you! We'll explore the many artworks that are on view in the museum, and then use what we learn to make extraordinary art from everyday moments. Discover all kinds of materials and ways to make art in the Shelton Studio, including sculpture, painting, collage, and more! We'll look at different ways to write, too. Join us for the week - or even a day - to explore your own possibilities!

Summer Art Camps Begin Next Week

Summer Art Camps at the UW Art Museum will begin next week. The theme for this year's camp is Look Around: What Do You See? Different age groups will meet during different weeks. See below for the complete schedule and registration information.

Artists have the most interesting way of looking at the world. Sometimes the most commonplace items become their subject. Other times they use materials that no one else would consider as art supplies. We’ll explore the work of an exciting array of artists who paint, print, collage, and more. We’ll write about our impressions of their viewpoint and make art inspired and informed by what we see. Soon others will be considering your unique perspective as you become the artist.

Ages 6-10: Monday-Friday, June 14-18, 1 - 4:45 pm

Ages 11-15: Monday-Friday, June 21-25, 1 - 4:45 pm

Weekly rate: $60/student

Drop in rate: $15/student

What do students do when they have a day off from school because it is a Staff Development Day for teachers? Spend the afternoon at the Art Museum! On Monday, April 26, students between the ages of 6-11 are invited to paint and sculpt in the Shelton Studio, after exploring the colorful art work of artist Harold Garde. Garde was a student at the University of Wyoming in the late 1940’s and the current retrospective of his expressive paintings and prints provide exciting opportunities for creating new work. Healthy snacks will be provided.

Monday Nights at the Museum

Looking for a fun way to spend your Monday evenings now that the Olympics are wrapping up? The UW Art Museum is open late on Monday nights this spring. To accommodate those who work 9-5, students who need some extra time, and anyone who just can't fit in a museum visit during the day, we're open until 9 pm on Monday evenings during both the fall (Sept-Nov) and spring (Feb-April) semesters.

Monday evenings are also when we hold things like "The No-Stress Art Class: Exploring with Watercolor," a hands-on studio class for teens and adults who are interested in working with watercolor. No experience is necessary! Call the Education Department at 307.766.3496 for more information or to sign up.

Public programs by visiting artists are also often held on Monday evenings, so keep an eye out throughout the year for Art Talks and lectures. Coming up this Monday night, March 1, is 20:20 for students. Stop by to hear brief presentations and see images of work by UW art students. This event begins at 7 pm. Future Monday night programs include an Art Talk by American painter Harold Garde and curator Jeannie Dowis on Monday, March 30 at 7 pm. This will be followed by a small reception. Unless otherwise noted, public programs are free and open to the public.
