Big Weekend of Events as the UW Art Museum reopens its Galleries

After a year long closure to renovations and upgrades, the UW Art Museum will open its galleries on Friday evening, March 6. Curator of the exhibition, Laurel Reuter (director, North Dakota Museum of Art) will be in attendance.

The Disappeared / Los Desaparecidos fills the museum's more than 10,000 sq ft of exhibition space with the work of 26 Latin American artists who have lived through the horrors of the military dictatorships that ruled their countries over the last 30 years.

Screening of the film Missing (Costa-gravas, director, 1982) with Sissy Spacek and Jack Lemon in a suspense thriller based on the rel life experience of American journalist Charles Horman and his wife's and father's search to find him after he disappeared in Chile

Art Museum Celebrates Re-Opening of Galleries

On March 6, 2009, the University of Wyoming Art Museum re-opens its galleries with a major, internationally touring exhibition called The Disappeared / Los Desaparecidos. Curated by Laurel Reuter, director and chief curator of the North Dakota Museum of Art, the exhibition presents the work of 26 Latin American artists who have incorporated their personal and cultural experiences of the "disappeared."

A series of public programs are being planned. Schedule to date includes:

Braced Ring with Outlyer Restored

Yesterday, artist Carl Reed delivered and installed a replacement "outlyer", the detached component of Braced Ring with Outlyer, after its was destroyed by vandals last fall. The work is located on Prexie's Pasture east of the College of Arts & Sciences.

Public Art Symposium Planned for April

The UW Art Museum in partnership with the Wyoming Arts Council is planning a 2-1/2 day symposium to consider the importance of public art in our communities and on our campuses.

Public Art and Community: Inspiration and Reflection is scheduled for April 2 - 4, 2009 at the UW Conference Center in Laramie. Ten of the sculptors in Sculpture: A Wyoming Invitational will present sessions on their work with nearly 30 additional presenters discussing other public art programs in Wyoming, various aspects of planning and installing the sculpture exhibition in Laramie, how the exhibition has been used in the classroom, and offer creative responses to the sculpture.
